Sarah Mclachlan A&E performance and interview

Interview:

Performance:

Repeat of the performance in the interview segment as a stand alone clip:

Sarah Mclachlan had always been someone I liked. After watching this interview I loved her just for her smooth way of handling this interview. She is private but yet open. She does a wonderful job of not telling what each song is about despite the interviewer's passive aggressive questions about song meaning.  I think his technique can be summed up as "We agreed beforehand that I would not ask these types of questions but it is all that I have. So by actually telling the audience that I agreed not to ask these types of questions, I can actually ask the question by putting you on the spot without actually asking the question." :) At the beginning of the interview he asks her if she is in the camp of not wanting to talk about song meaning, and later he admits in the interview that he already knows this saying he had agreed not to talk about individual song meaning. Sigh. Oh, I am very happy to have the interview and very happy to have the acoustic performances, but this A&E show need not have died. It could have worked as a morning show. But there are about 10 minutes of commercials before this spot, in one block. It is an awful strategy, I would think. Had they simply cut down the amount of commercials, they would probably have had a bigger audience and made up for the lack of commercial time with ratings. This show was sort of like Breakfast with the Advertisers who bring you bits of elegance, trust us, it will be here soon. Sarah is elegant, that is for sure.

Sonya Live - the private parts :)

hmmm, ok  I'll take your word for it. Not really convincing but I'm just a production assistant..

Dr. Sonya Friedman of Sonya Live CNN answers the question, what they heck do people talk about before doing promos. Just let me make it clear, I have plenty of nerve endings.

Backhaul feed CNN - Jeanne Moos - UN 1/10/91

Accidental pun in file title but funny considering the subject below.

I think all of my backhaul vids are dated before the first Gulf War. CNN scrambled its backhaul feeds after this due to security concerns. During the Gulf War a protester managed to get into the studio from a tour and cause havoc. Security concerns from this and war reporting in general probably caused them to scramble things.

Jeanne Moos:
http://www.cnn.com/CNN/anchors_reporters/moos.jeanne.html
This is a the best biography I could find. I think it is interesting that Jeanne Moos is such a ground breaking female reporter yet I cannot find a whole lot on her.

She is a great reporter. She is excellent in this clip but  it is Jeanne Moos, being "very careful."  I was trying to date this report and could find no fact of substance at all to search on. This is the nature of what the CNN 24 hour news cycle brought to the art of news reporting. The live feed was and is all the rage. And what it brings is a fear of reporting something inaccurately. With live updates and the emphasis of beating the other networks to the story (in this case mostly just the nightly news on the regulars) there is little time to fact check. There are strained resources because of the demands of coming up with 24 hours of programming. These kind of non-informational reports are standard today across all realms of instant news reporting. I only found by researching another clip.

Contrast this to any article or report that teaches you everything you need to know about a subject. I know they can be found because I come across one once in a while. Everything is put into context. There is not assumption on the part of the report that the viewer has all the facts up until this moment. I could go on and on about what is entertaining and gains ratings, and what is education and gains understanding, but I am not a great reporter. :)

Take a look at that giant ring. She was WAY ahead of her time. :)

I waded through a lot of tapes of feeds today before I found this one which was interesting to me. I found a show with Lou Dobbs but they cut out the sound between on air conversation so, while it is interesting to see him work back in the day, nothing much of his personality comes through and a lot of the clip is dead time.

Dav Lttrman 1986-1

When I recently rewatched this clip taped in 1986, I believe, the thing that stuck out most had nothing to do with the show itself, but the intro. The World Trade Center intro was a standard for so many years. It is as familiar as any show intro I can remember, except possibly Hawaii 5-0 :)  Yet, as well as I knew it, I was still unprepared to see it again.

CNN Backhaul Feed 1991- Stuart Varney - Your Money

"The Varner is Here!"  Stuart Varney, now on Fox Noise I think, did some amazing work over at CNN, well according to the Fox site. Apparently he was instrumental in setting up CNN's business desk. I'll just take the word of Fox just because I have never done it before and it sounds like fun. :) Here are some clips from what looks like a typical day for Varney in 1991. First he decides to quickly tape the interstitial clips for the weekend Your Money show despite the fact that he apparently has an upcoming live spot. He also tapes a promo. Then I post 3 live spots. An assistant asks if Varney is cold in the studio. His reply is kind of humorous. Also at the beginning of one of these clips notice the line he uses coming into the studio. You can see he is incredibly good at reading copy. Nothing phases him. And he definitely is a likable guy.

My Sister's House

This house belongs to my sister Charlotte DeVore. I am not sure exactly when this was taped but it must have been over ten years ago. My sister's previous house made Southern Living Magazine which was built and decorated by Phillip Sides. This house where she currently lives was remodeled and decorated by Phillip Sides. It was also featured in Southern Accents Magazine.
